About Course

Drawing from both research and practice, the course leads participants from foundational concepts such as what a mentorship is and why they should be implemented  to actual skills and processes required to establish a mentorship initiative. It is designed to prepare experienced staff to initiate and then mentor new staff  and applies across many fields and disciplines.

What Will You Learn?

  • The course is divided into three units - i) Building Supportive Relationships, ii) Learning the Practical Skills Required for Mentors, and, iii) Implementing a Mentorship Initiative. The course is asynchronous, which means that it can be taken at any time, and that sections can be repeated until you as a learner, are sure that you have grasped the content and can apply it to your work.

Course Content

Unit 1 – Building Supportive Relationships
Learning objective No. 1: Understand the importance of building supportive relationships to enhance learning. Learning objective No. 2: Understand and demonstrate attitudes, behaviours and skills which build relationships; and, Learning objective No. 3: Begin to apply these attitudes, behaviours, and skills on the job to Leadership and Mentoring.

Unit 2 – Learning the Practical Skills Required for Mentors
Learning Objective No. 1: Review and understand in more depth the importance of building supportive relationships. Learning Objective No. 2: Understand and be able to explain the difference between informal and formal mentoring and the advantages of formal mentoring. Learning Objective No. 3: Be prepared to apply the skills needed to meet the practical, personal, and professional needs of those being mentored.

Unit 3 – Implementing a Mentorship Initiative
Learning Objective No. 1: Understand How Adults Learn Best Learning Objective No. 2: Analyze and Understand the Culture of your Organization Learning Objective No. 3: Identify Support Needed by New Staff: Informational, Personal and Professional Learning Objective No. 4: Beginning the Mentorship/How to Begin a Relationship
